Obituary for Childress

John M. Childress, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1975, died on Wednesday, October 11, 2000. John is survived by his wife Lucille Childress; and sister, Mira Somerville of Amarillo, TX. Mr. Childress was born in Yampa, CO on June 19, 1912. He graduated from high school in Steambeat Springs, CO in 1931, and from Colorado State University in 1936 with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering. In 1939, he was appointed Technical Foreman Engineer with the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1940, Mr. Childress accepted a position as Junior Engineer at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, Co. Soon after he accepted a position as Assistant Engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation in Steamboat Springs, CO. In 1941, after Pearl Harbor, he applied for and received a commission in the Navy as an Ensign. Mr. Childresss Naval service included over 3 years duty in New Guinea and the South Pacific. At wars end, Mr. Childress resumed his career with the Bureau of Reclamation. After 34 years of federal civil service, he retired in 1972. Soon after he married Lucille Bell in 1975. Mr. And Mrs. Childress enjoyed cruises to China, Greek Isles, Panama, Alaska and Hawaii. They have been active in Shriners activities, golfing and RVing with the Shrine Nomads in and around New Mexico. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Masonic Lodge, Santa Fe Consistory and Ballut Abyad Shrine. Mr. Childress also enjoyed photography, electronics and woodworking. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial service will be held on Monday, October 16, 2000, 10:00 a.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.
