Obituary for Baca

Deolinda Baca, 94, passed away Sunday, June 4, surrounded by her loving family and sister. A resident of Santa Monica, CA since 1942, Deolinda was born into an old Spanish family in La Cienega, NM. Her grandfather, Don Pedro Bautista Pino, was elected in 1810 as the New Mexico Territorial Representative to the Spanish Cortes in Spain. Deolinda's mother, Trinidad Pino de Montoya, was described in a 1975 article in The New Mexican as every inch a grand dame of the old school with her delicate black lace mantilla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amado Baca; and parents, Miguel and Trinidad Pino de Montoya; sisters, Celine Vigil, Josephine C. de Baca, Elda Montoya, Margaret del Valle, Annabel Cox; and brother, Miguel Montoya. She is survived by her children, Arturo and wife, Mary, San Rafael, CA, Sylvianna Baca, Santa Monica, CA, Sally Colonna, Lexington, TX, and Evangeline Madrid and husband, Carlos of Bernalillo; her grandchildren, Karla Blaine, Karol Hobbs, Kurtis, Kris and Kevin Colonna, John and Robert Madrid and Shirley Herron; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Fita Brown, Amelia Andrews; and brother, Antonio Montoya; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends. Deolinda served her country during WWII in the elite group known as"Rosie the Riveter" at San Pedro Naval Ship Yards and later was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital until retiring in 1969. Her retirement was spent dedicating many years of service to her parish Saint Clement's Church and St. Joseph's Center. She received recognition for her services to others from the Hispanic Ministry of Los Angeles in 1997 and more recently the Lay Minister Benemerenti Award from Pope John Paul II. A Memorial Mass was held at St. Clement's Church on June 6 with six priests concelebrating Mass. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, at San Jose Catholic Church in La Cienega, NM, with Father Ernest Sweeney from Loyola-Marymont University as Celebrant. Interment will follow at San Jose Cemetery.
