Obituary for Kornegay

Viola Harris Kornegay, early pioneer of Lea County, died at age 88 on October 15, 2000 at her home in Santa Fe, where she lived the past six years. Viola was born on April 28, 1912 on the family homestead on the H-V Ranch, Lea County, New Mexico. She attended elementary school in nearby Highway School and high school in Tatum. Viola married Raymond Coffey Kornegay on December 20, 1930 at the H-V Ranch. Their first home was a small tent on the nearby Kornegay farm. She graduated from Eastern New Mexico Junior College in 1938 with an Associate of Arts degree and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1952. Viola began her teaching career at Harroun Farm School in Eddy County in 1943. She later taught in Carlsbad, Tatum, and retired in Roswell, New Mexico in 1974. Viola was preceded in death by her father, Harve Harris in 1965; her mother, Naomi Hagar Harris in 1988; her son, Alvin Duane in 1932; her husband, R.C. Kornegay in 1964; and her daughter, Cheryl Diane in 1966. She is survived by her son, Clinton Durwood Kornegay and wife, Rosalind of Providence, RI; daughter, Yuvonnia Ilene Kornegay Owen and husband, Aubrey Owen of Abiquiu, NM; granddaughter, Reins Owen DeMartino and husband, Thomas DeMartino of Albuquerque; grandson, Dan Kornegay Owen of Salta Lake City, UT; grandson, Paul Rainey Owen and wife, Shirley of Santa Fe; grandson, Derek Kornegay of Providence, RI; and great-grandchildren, Guiseppe and Lucia DeMartino, Morgan Owen and Erin and Rachel Owen. A Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at Zia United Methodist Church in Santa Fe. A graveside burial service will be held at the family cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2000, on the H-V Ranch near Tatum, NM."(W)e will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he had done."
