Obituary for Bowers

Zillah Ellen Bowers was born July 25, 1906 at her family home on a farm in North Roby, a community in Fisher County Texas. She was the daughter of Robert A. and Lillian Gertrude Weatherby, prominent West Texas farmers and ranchers. She had four brothers and four sisters, who all preceded her in death. Educated in Fisher and Nolan Counties, she graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1923. Upon graduation she began work as a bookkeeper for Western Union Telegraph Company in Sweetwater. In 1930 she married Herbert M. (Shady) Bowers, who also worked for Western Union. They moved to Dallas with Western Union in 1934. Her husband died in 1962. Mrs. Bowers worked for Western Union in Dallas until her retirement in 1973 after forty-nine years of service. She had resided in Albuquerque since 1987. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Commercial Telegraphers' Union, AFL-CIO, and the Western Union Retirees Association. Mrs. Bowers is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Marge Bowers; her grandaughter, Laurie Thompson; her grandson, Michael Bowers; and two great-grandsons, Derek and Aidan Thompson, all of Albuquerque. A great-granddaughter, Delany Thompson, preceded her in death in 1998. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2002 at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX (214) 363-5401. Entombment will follow in Sparkman-Hillcrest Mausoleum.
