Obituary for Jackson

William E. J. "Bill" Jackson, 81, a highly-decorated military veteran and a 45-year resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, January 3, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Bettye D. Jackson; and three sons, CAPT William A. Jackson, SC, USN (ret) of Albuquerque and his wife, Barbara, CAPT John E. Jackson, SC, USN (ret) of Newport, RI and his wife, Valerie and Mr. Robert M. Jackson of Albuquerque and his wife, Barbara. He is also survived by six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Born in New York City in 1920, he spent most of his life in military service. He first wore a uniform as a New York Naval Cadet in 1934, and later served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Marine Corps (1938-1942), as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps (1946-1949), as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army (1950-1952), as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy (1964-1967), and as a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve 1968-1980). For his service during the Korean War he earned seven campaign medals and two Unit Citations. All together, he spent 27 years in all four branches of military service, an accomplishment which has been termed"rare and remarkable" by senior defense officials. Bill, Bettye and the boys moved to Albuquerque in 1957, to enable Bill to commence a career at Sandia National Laboratories from which he retired in 1978. A longtime supporter of law enforcement, he was a 1st Lieutenant in the Bernalillo County Citizens Unit and a commissioned Deputy Sheriff, working closely with city, state and federal authorities. Appointed a Justice of the Peace and a Magistrate Judge, Justice Jackson was active in local politics and civic affairs for many years. His hobbies included computers, amateur radio (call sign KC5VWP), and casino visits. Services will be held Monday, January 7, 2002, at 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at 12:00 noon, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
