Obituary for Martin

Ellen E. Martin, 82, a resident of Albuquerque for 45 years, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002, of pneumonia, following hip surgery. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Ohman Slade; sons, Douglas William Ohman and Robert Carl Ohman and wife, Teresa; and sister, Edith Reed; five grandchildren, Kelly Ashbaugh and husband, Mark, Danny Ohman and wife, Nicolle, David Ohman, Deani Ohman and Carly Ohman; one great-grandchild, Christine Marie Ashbaugh; numerous sisters-in-law, including Eva Koskimaki and husband, George, Sally Ohman, Marion Ohman and Agnes Metsa; numerous nieces and nephews, including favorites, Doris Armstrong Radgowski, Patricia Ohman Maki, Christine Koskimaki Attalai, Nancy Londberg Reed, Delores Londberg Macy, and John Kolehmainen. She loved her family; animals (especially her dogs and cats); her friends, especially her lifelong friend, Gladys Mitchell Rendell, and other surviving friends including Ona Mitchell, Arminta Robinson, Warren T. Slade and Warren M. Slade, Weldon and Dr. Regina Merritt, Elise Laine, June and Tauno Keranen, Alice Brinkley, Florence Hanson, Viola Mackey and Bessie Smith. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her two husbands, Henry Ohman in 1949 who left her alone with three small children; and by Joseph Martin in 1977. She worked tirelessly and alone as a single mother for ten years to keep her family together. She was a member of Christ Unity Church for 40 years. Mrs. Martin retired from Sandia Corporation after 20 years in 1978, where she was a secretary and later a computer analyst. At the time of her retirement, she was honored by Sandia Corporation with an offer to send her to engineering school. However, she chose to do volunteer work in tax preparation for the elderly and as church secretary at Christ Unity Church. She generously devoted herself to others, especially sacrificing herself for her children and grandchildren. Some of her favorite charities were Animal Humane Association, 615 Virginia SE, Albuquerque, NM, 87108 and Unity School of Christianity in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Services will be held Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Rev. Guy Lynch officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Friday, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
