Obituary for Slocum

Genevieve E Slocum, 93 years of age, a resident of Manor Care Health Center in Albuquerque passed away January 16, 2002, where she had resided for one year and ten and a half months so that she could be closer to her family. She was born on April 2, 1908 in Beaman, Iowa and grew up in that farming community. Genevieve, after high school, went on to College to become a certified schoolteacher, than taught in Marshalltown, Iowa for a few years. She married Rily A. Slocum in 1930 and became a farm wife in Iowa, where she was active in 4H, and became a leader for several years. She was an owner of a Restaurant, than became an executive housekeeper for several years. She managed several motels/restaurants then was hired by Travelodge Corporation as a traveling Manager. After retiring, she and her husband and family moved to Arkansas in 1976 where she once again started quilting with a church group in Johnson County. She enjoyed dancing and playing cards with her friends, she also did needle point crafts. To relax, she would sit in the sun and read one of her many books that she collected. Her husband preceded her in death in 1981. Surviving her is a sister, Betty Liegl of Central City, Iowa; daughter, Marlys Suiter of Albuquerque, NM. Her grandson's are Douglas Chester of Dundee, Iowa and AM1 Rily Suiter USN of Jacksonville, FL. Her Cremation was held on January 18, 2002 at 4:00 p.m., there was a Memorial Service held at Manor Care Health Center at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, where her family and other friends could attend. The family plans a burial service in Iowa this summer where she will be placed next to her husband's resting place. A memorial gift can be given in her name to Camp Courage in Monticello, Iowa.
