Obituary for Montoya

Richard "Ricardo" Montoya, 82, a resident of Albuquerque, NM since 1963, died at home, Saturday, January 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Alicia M. Montoya; and also by son, Ricardo D. Montoya; daughters, Margaret E. Montoya and husband, Charles Boyer and Mary Ellen Fresquez and husband, John Hertz of Gilbert, AZ; daughter-in-law, Angie Montoya; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Fresquez, Greg A. Fresquez and wife, Lissa, Vanessa Nestelroad and husband, Brad, Alicia Ambroso and husband, Curt, Roberto Montoya and wife, Patricia, Diana Montoya-Boyer and Alejandra Montoya-Boyer; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Fresquez, Jack Fresquez, Liam Nestelroad and Mireya Montoya; from California; sisters, Priscilla Tafoya and husband, Raymond, and Lillian Varela and husband, Frank; brothers, Felix Montoya, Jr. and Bennie Montoya; sister-in-law, Ester Montoya; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and his first wife, Virginia Alarid Montoya. Mr. Montoya was a Master Sergeant in WWII, serving in the Aleutian Islands in AK and in Europe. Mr. Montoya graduated from Highlands University and did Masters Degree work at USC and Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, TX. He worked as a social worker for Catholic Charities and the State of NM for more than 25 years. He was an active member in the Catholic Church and in many civic and religious organizations, such as United Way, Los Trabajadores de la Raza and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Montoya had an enduring commitment to education. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, providing an example for his children and grandchildren, all of whom followed in his footsteps. It was his wonderful sense of humor and deep faith in God that enabled us to enjoy his final years as he battled Alzheimer's Disease. Rosary and Celebration of Life will be recited Friday, January 25, 2002, 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas and Tennessee. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 26, 2002, 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church with Father Luis Jaramillo, Celebrant. Arrangements by French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to educational services at Catholic Charities of Central NM, 1410 Coal Ave. SE, 87104.
