Obituary for Powell

Joe Louis Powell of Elida, NM died Saturday evening February 23, 2002 in Clovis, NM at the age of 88. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Elida Baptist Church with Rev. Herb Gage, Pastor officiating. He will be assisted by Dr. Herbert Bergrstrom. Burial will follow in the Elida Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sam West, Joe West, Scott Hendershot, Jimmy West, Thomas West, Brent West and Cody West. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob Moorhead, Charles May, Kenneth Dixon, Gene Creighton, Johnny Smith, Charles Good, Charlie McClain, Tommy Shaw and all of his other ranching friends. Those who desire to make memorial contributions may direct them to either the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches or to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home in Portales. Mr. Powell was born March 2, 1913 on the family ranch west of Elida, to the home of Jenny and Joseph K. Powell. Mr. Powell lived his entire life on that same ranch. He was a 1931 graduate of Elida High School. On December 24, 1935, in Clovis, he was married to Evelyn Finley. Joe was a member and Past Master of the Elida Lodge #31 AF&AM. He was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star and had served that organization as Worthy Patron. He was very active as a member of numerous boards. He had served on the Roosevelt County Telephone Board for 25 years, more than 20 years on the Elida School Board, a number of years on the Border Soil Conservation Board, several years on the Federal Land Bank Board, and was on the Advisory Board of the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Elida and served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Survivors include Evelyn Powell, his wife of more than 66 years of the home; two daughters, Cheryll Kay Llendershot of Portales and Peggy Jo Sommer and her husband, George of Pie Town, NM; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Irene Powell and Bernus Steele both of Roswell and Dolly Self of Elida.
