Obituary for MURRAY

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday October 27, 2004

Wanda Gerene Mitchell Murray passed peacefully from this life, Sunday, October 24, 2004, surrounded by her family. Born October 10, 1932, Gerene grew up in Prague, Oklahoma. Gerene met Jack Lee Murray during his Christmas leave in 1951. They were married on March 4, 1952. She stood faithfully by his side for over 52 years, supporting him through a 28-year Navy career and many years of retirement. Gerene and Jack enjoyed being a part of the square dance community, where Jack was a caller. They also greatly enjoyed traveling throughout the country in their motor home, often accompanied by their granddaughters. Gerene loved to go to Las Vegas and Laughlin, where she usually won at the casinos. Gerene and Jack raised their two children, Janet and Dennis, to be strong and loving people. Through countless military moves, Gerene always made her children feel at home, and she always gave them a place to come home to once they grew up. Gerene loved all things natural and beautiful. She enjoyed sitting in her backyard, especially when it was raining, drinking tea, looking at her beloved pink roses, and soaking in the songs of the birds. Proud of her Native American heritage, she loved to immerse herself in the culture of her ancestors. She loved to shop, hot rod, and sew. Gerene loved being a wife, a mother, and a Nana. Gerene is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Jasper and Hattie Alena Young Mitchell; her brothers, Glen Ernest and Ralph Eugene Mitchell; her sister, Loretta Jean Mitchell Hicks Henson; and her half-brother, Wilson Mitchell. We know she must be enjoying seeing them all again. Gerene is survived by her husband, Jack Murray; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Michael Miller; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Diana Murray; granddaughters, Michelle York, Christina Murray, and Holly Murray-Sedillo and their families, including great-grandchildren, Christopher York Jr. and Edward Jr., Topanga, Diamond, and Emerald Sedillo. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Gerene was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
