Obituary for Shishman

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday March 06, 2002

Andre Akos Shishman, PE, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1984, died unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, February 27, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hedda Shishman; son, Tom Shishman and wife, Marsha; daughter, Ildy Shishman Rolfs and husband, Ells, all of Albuquerque; four grandsons, Scott Shishman and wife, Debbie of Elkhart, IN, Mike Shishman of Chicago, IL, Greg Shishman of Tucson, AZ, and Timothy Rolfs of Albuquerque; and two great-grandchildren, Megan and Matt Shishman of Elkhart, IN. Andre leaves behind several cousins, nieces, nephews and two sisters-in-law in Hungary, Romania and Australia. Born Zsizsmann Endre in Budapest, Hungary, on August 1, 1912, he earned his degree in engineering at the Technical University of Budapest, and also became an accomplished musician. He met his future wife when they were teenagers; Andre and Hedda were married in Budapest on October 3, 1936. They left Hungary with their son in December 1944, escaping to Germany, where they lived for seven years. Andre provided for his family during the post-war era by forming"Andre's Budapest Band", a musical group comprised of fellow Hungarian refugees. The band was engaged by the USO and entertained American occupation forces at various venues throughout Germany. In 1951, Andre brought his wife, son and daughter to Norfolk, Virginia, where he re-started and successfully advanced his engineering career. He joined Fraioli-Blum-Yesselman Consulting Engineers in 1952, and rose to the positions of associate, partner, and finally president of the firm. Andre was a Fellow and past-president of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He retired from FBY in 1984 and moved to Albuquerque. He continued his professional activities as a valued structural consultant to several Albuquerque and New Mexico A/E firms for another ten years. Andre was the devoted, loving, respected and loved head of the small group that is the Shishman and Zsizsmann family in the US and on two other continents. His spiritual leadership and financial support of family members experiencing difficult times anywhere in the world set an example none of us shall ever forget. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church, 8901 Candelaria Road NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112; the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church as well. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Andre's name be made to the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd, 218 Iron Street SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102, or to Joy Junction, 4500 2nd Street SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105. The world was a better place while Andre was with us; your family and many friends will miss you forever. May you rest in God's Eternal Peace.
