Obituary for Hults

James W. Hults, 53, passed away March 26, 2002 surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, but moved to New Mexico at an early age. He enlisted at age 17 with the U.S. Navy (Sea Bee's & SEALs Team) September 10, 1965 and served aboard the U.S.S. Roosevelt CVA42 as well as the U.S.S. Saratoga CVA60 and was honorably discharged April 30, 1970 after his final combat tour in Vietnam. Jim entered the Albuquerque Police Department Academy in July 1970. During his 20+ years, he worked as Patrol Officer, Field Investigator, Parking Control Supervisor, Traffic Analysis Supervisor, Police Reserve Coordinator/Supervisor, Training Officer, Fatal Accident Coordinator, School Crossing Guard Supervisor, Academy Instructor, Cadet Field Training Officer, but his true love was riding his Harley (M-90) 14 years as a Traffic Officer! He also taught Police Science at TV-I for several years. After retiring at the rank of Lieutenant, Jim decided to try something outside of law enforcement and wanting to spend more time with his family, went to work with his wife, Yvonne, son, Randy and father-in-law, Bill at Albuquerque Publishing Co. After a few months, Jim was offered a job with the Government and so he began his 2nd career with the Department of Veteran Affairs Police and worked for ten years until his illness deteriorated his health and he retired as Operations Manager/Captain (El Jefe). Jim dedicated 30 years of service to law enforcement and was proud of it. Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter, and loved spending time at the cabin in Red River with his wife and children. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Joseph F. Hults and his brother-like best friend, Julian A. Duran. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Yvonne Byers Hults; children, Randy and wife, Corinna Hults, Gina Hults, Sharon Hults, James Hults, Joseph Hults and Joe Chairez; grandchildren, Andrew Chairez, Brianna, Mathew, Nicole Jamie, Tasha and Lisa Hults; mother, Grace Hults; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Bill and Josie Byers; brother-in-law, Bill (Boy) Byers Jr.; special niece/goddaughter, Shanna Byers; nephew, William (Bubba) Byers; siblings, Sandy, Ann, Cathy and Joe and many other relatives and friends. Viewing will be held Monday, April 1, 2002 from 2:00 p.m. until time of Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, 9300 Golf Course Rd. NW (3 blocks north of Paseo del Norte). Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's On The Rio Grande Catholic Church, 4000 St. Joseph Dr NW. Interment will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full Military Honors. Pallbearers will be Andy Benavides, Alex Magallanez, Billy Tindell, Bob Terry, John Owen, and Dezra Dautrive. Jim has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. Jimmy James....rest easy, no more pain.
