Obituary for Ely

Chief Master Sergeant Retired, Richard Bruce"Rick" Ely, 48, of Eldersburg, MD died Tuesday evening April 9, 2002 at his home after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Born April 24, 1953 in Baltimore, MD, he is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Mary Cecelia Leatherwood Ely; and four sons, Richard Scott, Timothy, Michael and Joshua and daughter-in-law, Emily. He was the son of Richard Charles and Nancy Watts Ely and is also survived by his maternal grandfather, Wilbur Watts. Chief Ely served his country with honor in the Air Force as a security specialist for 26 years. He and his family had lived in England and Germany as well as the Dakotas, Michigan and New Mexico. He earned his BA from the University of Maryland and his MA from Webster University. Retired from the Air Force in 1998, at the time of his death, was employed by the Wackenhut Company as Director of Nuclear Training. Born in Baltimore, Rick and his family moved to Carroll County when he was in middle school and this is where he met Ceal. Though they spent many years living around the world, Rick always considered Maryland home and was happy to have returned recently. He enjoyed playing stringed instruments, singing, outdoor activities and spending time with family and friends. Surviving are brothers, Earl"Butch" Ely and John Ely; and sister, Elvamarie Miller; two grandchildren; and 14 nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Oakland United Methodist Church 5901 Mineral Hill Rd., Eldersburg with John Szymanski from Carroll Community Church officiating. Interment will be at Lake View Memorial Park, MD. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 12, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Burrier-Queen Funeral Directors, P.A., Winfield, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, (Beside South Carroll High School). Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund at Carroll Community Church, 5220 Klees Mill Road, Suite E, Sykesville, MD 21784.
