Obituary for Rivera

Gavina (Vina) Nuanes Rivera, 77, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away April 20, 2002, after a brief illness. She was born on June 21, 1924, as the youngest of 12 children born to Remigio and Beatriz Nuanes in Old Town Albuquerque. She graduated from Albuquerque High School and later married Manuel Rivera. She gave birth to five children, all born in Albuquerque. Later, as a single mother, she lovingly cared for her children in the Duranes area, working for 31 years for the Bernalillo County Juvenile Probation Office, where she supervised the staff and later became the Children's Court Clerk. She was a devout Catholic and faithfully worshipped at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. She is survived by her five children, Charlotte Walton, and her husband, Kenneth, Geraldine Rivera, and her husband, William Deaton; Robert Rivera, Beatriz (Betty) Rivera, and David Rivera, and his wife, Patricia; six grandchildren, Randall and Todd Turrietta, Jeffrey Bowerman, Marc Rivera and Bennigna Rivera, of Albuquerque, and Savanna (Rivera) Halwas, and her husband, Todd Halwas, of South Carolina; five great-grandchildren, Sean Turrietta, Victoria, Ashlyn and Dallas Turrietta, and Dorothy Emma Halwas; her surviving siblings are Nestor Nuanes, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Annie Garcia, and her son, Harry Garcia, of Albuquerque, and Joseph Nuanes, and his wife, Margie, of Whittier, California. A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at 7:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos Rd. NW. The Pallbearers are Jeffrey Bowerman, Todd Turrietta, Marc Rivera, Bennigna Rivera, Paul Nuanes and Harry Garcia. Honorary Pallbearers are Robert D. Chavez, Pete Chavez, Raymond Saavedra, Ernest Nuanes, Jr., William Deaton and Kenneth Walton. At a later date her remains will be cremated and a private ceremony will occur for their final disposition. We will forever miss the quiet, kind and dignified grace of our loving Mother.
