Obituary for Earnest

Altha Love Wright Earnest, 92, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went home to her Lord on April 20, 2002, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Elbert E. Earnest; sons, James W. of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Stephen E. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and daughter, Kathleen Shea of Albuquerque. There are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Altha was born in Washita County, OK., December 30, 1909. She came to New Mexico in 1934, graduated from Vaughn High School in 1935, taught in a one-room, eight grade school at West Mesa in Torrance County. On December 22, 1935, she married Elbert Earnest, devoted herself to her husband, his career, their family and their church. She was an expert seamstress and clothing designer. She had her own career as shop owner of The Birdwatcher, on Canyon Road in Santa Fe for many years. After retirement in 1985, she wrote and published her autobiography,"From the Prairie to the Mountains". The family suggests contributions in Altha's memory to the St. John's United Methodist Church, 1200 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe, NM 87501, or the Alzheimer's Assoc. of NM, 8100 Mountain Road, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Visitation will be at McGee Memorial Chapel Tuesday, April 23, 2002 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., at St. John's United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 24, 2002; burial will follow at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens.
