Obituary for Adams

Walter A. Adams (84) died June 8, 2002, after a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean; his children, Carol Biggs and husband, Cliff of Henderson, NV, Donald and wife, Veralyn; grandchildren, David and Gloria Adams, of Tucson, AZ,; a sister, Edith Adams McFerren of Rancho Bernardo, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (now Kansas State University), where he met his wife. Shortly after their marriage, he began working in the Navy Department, Bureau of Ships in Washington, D.C., where he worked on the design of surface and submersibles for the Navy. He participated in the development of the Navy's first nuclear submarine. In 1952, the family moved to Albuquerque where he worked in various departments of Sandia Corporation, now Sandia Labs. He retired in 1979 and since that time he and his wife have traveled extensively. He was a registered engineer in both the District of Columbia and New Mexico and had belonged to the American Association of Mechanical Engineers and the Solar Energy Society of new Mexico. He was active in the Heights YMCA and swam in the Senior Olympics for many years, competing at the state and national levels. He was a member and ordained elder in Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will be at Immanuel Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. The family is grateful for the loving care given to Walter by Zia Hospice nurses and counselors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle, SE; the American Cancer Society, 5400 Lomas, NE; Zia Hospice, 4147 Montgomery, NE; the Heights YMCA, 4901 Indian School, NE; or the charity of one's choice.
