Obituary for Handy

Elizabeth W. Handy, a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, passed on suddenly and without suffering on Tuesday, July 2, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Handy; daughter, Nancy Mattson; grandsons, Robert Mattson, Thomas Mattson and John Mattson; son, John Bart Wilburn; and grandchildren, Abigail Wilburn, Carolyn Salberg and Scott Wilburn. Elizabeth lived a vibrant life of style and purposeful achievement. She was loved by her family and many friends, and instilled in them the joy of purposeful pursuit and the distinction between good and excellent. Elizabeth graduated from Memphis State University in History and French literature, and taught for many years until her retirement from Albuquerque Public Schools. She is remembered well by many former students and colleagues. Elizabeth was active in Daughters of the Nile, auxiliary to the Masonic Shrine, the P.E.O., and the American Association of University Women. She and husband Robert traveled extensively and were exploring the Tennessee River on July 2, 2002. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver SE, with Pastor Tom Beach officiating.
