Obituary for Keulen

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday July 21, 2002

Katarina Alida Keulen passed away Friday morning at 3:30 a.m. local time. She immigrated to the USA from The Netherlands with her husband in 1959 and became a citizen in 1965. In 1966, she helped create our home in the East Mountain area, which would have been a lot harder without her help and encouragement. She was a long time resident in the East Mountains and an avid member of Edelweiss Am Rio Grande for many years. Her support of her family was outstanding, as was her wonderful sense of humor. She had been residing in a nursing home in The Netherlands for the last nine years due to an affliction with Alzheimer's disease, which rendered her unable to speak American any longer. Her husband, Johannes Keulen, of 48 years preceded her in death in 1990. She is survived by her daughter, Alida Lenox and her husband, Walter Lenox; her son, Fred Keulen and his wife, Linda Keulen; her grandchildren Jody Spurgeon, Kathy O'Conner, Sarah Keulen, Daniel Keulen and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service and cremation will take place in The Netherlands and her ashes will be shipped to the USA after the Dutch law requirement of 30 days delay has been met. An additional service will be held in the USA shortly after arrival of her remains. Any parties interested in attending that service are invited to call Fred Keulen at 286-4646 around the middle of August.
