Obituary for Townsend

Alvin Neal Townsend, 67, artist, professor emeritus at The University of New Mexico and Albuquerque resident since 1943 died August 14, 2002 after a valiant battle with brain cancer. An artist and teacher who created jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, drawings and paintings during a 45-year career, Neal was born in Rock Island, Texas on October 26, 1934 to Archie Lee Townsend and Synthia Ellen Westbrook. He graduated from Highland High School and served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War before earning his BFA and MA in Fine Arts from The University of New Mexico, where he taught for 21 years. He also taught at Northeast Louisiana State College, Vancouver School of Fine Art, in Canada, Northern Arizona University, as well as workshops throughout New Zealand. Neal's work has been exhibited in more than 250 juried and invitational shows in the United States and abroad. He drew inspiration for his art from New Mexico's spectacular landforms and breathtaking skies. Neal was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Betsy Brown Townsend; four daughters, Brita Townsend Judd and husband, Monty, of Albuquerque, Lissi Gonzalez and husband, Manuel, of Rio Rancho, Shana Townsend and husband, David Simmons, of Albuquerque, and Kristinn Townsend and fiance, Gino Juarez of Albuquerque. He is also survived by grandchildren, Manuel Gonzalez Jr. and fiance, Lorraine Rosales, and David, Sarah, and Matthew Gonzalez of Rio Rancho, Otto Townsend, Cameron, Hannah, Hunter and Angus Simmons, and Dana Casados, of Albuquerque; one great-granddaughter, Savannah Gonzalez of Rio Rancho; brother-in-law, David C. Brown and wife, Rita, of Virginia; niece, Kirsten B. Mitchell and husband, Luke; and grandnephew, Niels of Washington D.C.; as well as countless loving friends. Neal's discovery of art and beauty in every aspect of life has been passed on to his family, students and friends. A memorial gathering and a solo exhibition of his last paintings will be held September 7, 2002 from 2:00-4:00 PM at Johnsons of Madrid Galleries of Fine and Fiber Art, 2843 Highway 14, Madrid NM (505) 471-1054. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Zia Hospice, 4147 Montgomery NE Albuquerque, NM 87109 who provided outstanding, compassionate care for Neal in his final days.
