Obituary for Miller

Cantor Robert"Bob" M. Miller, age 79, died Thursday August 15, 2002 surrounded by his family. Bob was born in Brooklyn, New York, June 23, 1923 to Benjamin and Dorothy Miller. He became a very educated man with numerous degrees including a Masters degree in Music from Ithaca College in New York. He became a Cantor after graduating from Hebrew Union College in New York and began his career as the first Cantor at Temple Beth Emeth in Albany, New York from 1955 - 1962, then moving to San Bernardino, California and Cantoring there from 1962-1966. He was the President of the American Conference of Cantors from 1959-1961. In 1966 he moved to Kansas City and was the Cantor at Congregation B'Nai Jehudah until 1978 when he came to Albuquerque. He served as the Cantor for both Congregation B'Nai Israel and Congregation Albert before retiring as a Cantor. After retiring as a Cantor Bob worked as a Disc Jockey for KHFM radio here in Albuquerque, then worked with H & R Block and Associated Insurance Professionals until he retired for a second time. Bob's first love was music and was very talented, playing many instruments including the violin and the piano at a very young age. He played the Viola in the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. He loved to travel, had a great sense of humor, told wonderful stories, and never met a stranger. All will miss him. Bob is survived by his wife, Erma Kokkes Miller of Albuquerque; sister, Evelyn McKenzie and Husband, Arthur of New York; sons, Phillip Wayne Miller of Nevada, Jonathan D. Miller and wife Maureen of Kentucky, Joel D. Miller and wife Lisa Mondy of Cedar Crest; daughters, Naomi Ferris and husband Jim of Missouri, Terry Harrington of Indiana; 9 grand children; and 2 great grand children. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Zacharias Miller in August, 1989; and his son, Jeremy Douglas Miller in January, 1997. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd. NE, on Monday 2:00 PM. Arrangements by Aspen Funeral Alternatives, 1935 Juan Tabo NE (323-9000).
