Obituary for Archer

William H. (Bill) Archer, 79 and a resident of Albuquerque since 1965, passed away on August 22, 2002. He was born in Wythe County, Virginia, the son of Jetty Ingo Archer and William L. Archer. He joined the US Marine Corps in 1942 and remained on active duty until his retirement as a Gunnery Sergeant in 1965. He was a member of the Third Marine Division during World War II and the Korean War. On settling in Albuquerque, he was employed by Andrews Electrical Company prior to being hired by the University of New Mexico where he served as the Lead Electrician until his retirement in 1984. Beginning in 1965, William was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Sandia District, where he served as Cubmaster for Pack 443. He was also a charter member of Troop 443 where he became the Scoutmaster for many years. In 1977, he was selected by the Great Southwest Council to be a Scoutmaster for a local troop attending the National Jamboree. He was the recipient of the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver, the highest honor a scouting volunteer can receive. He is survived by his wife, Barbara M. Archer; sons, Patrick Archer and wife, Rene, and Brian Archer and companion, Monica Chavez; grandson, Elijah B. Archer; brothers, Conway Archer and wife, D'Ann of Bedford, VA, and Mitchell Archer and wife, Jean of Gilmer, TX; and sisters, Helen Holmes and Katherine Chandler. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Chapel of Sandia, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE. Inurnment will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 6 in Santa Fe National Cemetery.
