Obituary for Ables

Stanley Fletcher Ables, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, September 6, 2002, surrounded by his family. Stanley is the beloved husband of and survived by Anna; daughters, Coral Lee Gibson and husband, Thurman of Beeville, TX, Jessica Janeen Howard and husband, Roy of Vanderwagen, NM, Stanlie Gail Andrews and husband, Mike, Joyce Ladd, Anna M. Smetana all of Albuquerque; son, Troy E. Ables and wife, Jayne of Tijeras; sister, DeLaures Peppler of Columbia City, IN; 24 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and 6 great great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife Jessie Content Foutz Ables. Mr. Ables was a member of the North Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a member of the Zia Daylight Lodge #77 AF & AM and Albuquerque Scottish Rite Club. He served in different positions in both his church and lodge. He was an avid golfer and was involved in the Optimist club, United States Golf Association, Toastmasters club International, and Telephone pioneers of America. Mr. Ables worked for AT&T long lines division traveling and working in 38 states and Canada prior to 1950. He transferred to Mountain Bell as a plant engineer and finally retired as a Right-of-Way agent in 1978. He earned his pilots license in 1947. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corp. in the early 30s. Mr. Ables started his work career with the telephone company that spanned 41 years. Starting September 5, 1937 and ending with retirement March 4, 1978. He continued working on a contract basis for a further 3 years. In his spare time he started and maintained Ables Repair Service for many years. He always found time though for golfing. He started as a caddy as soon as he was able to hold a golf bag. He even got a whole in one at one point in his golfing days. Stanley Ables was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, June 11, 1914 to Wilbur Elmo Ables and Mary Leona Waterman. He moved way out West to Arizona in the 30s because he disliked the weather back east. During WWII he was a heavy equipment operator building airfields and laying essential trans-continental cable in Canada. Coming out of the great depression he worked in the CCC Camps. He had a phenomenal memory for the places he traveled, old friends, and addresses. After retirement he worked with the Shriner's ferrying children back and forth to the airport, train station, hotels or doctor's office to obtain treatment. He and his wife traveled extensively after retirement to visit relatives and fish all over the US. Services will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, North Valley Ward, 1100 North Montano Rd. NW, with Bishop Scot Thurgood officiating. Interment will follow at Sandia Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Larry Hicks, Zane Howard, Jess Howard, Micheal Andrews, Charles Andrews, and Robert Andrews. Honorary pallbearers will be Troy Ables, Richard R. Andrews, Thurman Floyd Gibson Jr., John Smetana, Ernest Spicer II, Frank Ladd Jr., and James McDougald. Friends may visit Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, North Valley Ward, Tuesday from 10:00 a.m to 10:30 a.m. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
