Obituary for Severns

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday November 08, 2002

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lulu Belle Severns. She passed away Sunday, November 3, 2002. She was 88 years old and was born November 20, 1913 in Williamsburg, Iowa. Lu was a wonderful wife for more than 50 years to Joseph William Severns, who preceded her in death in 1985. Living in Southern California most of her life, after Joe's death, Lu moved to Albuquerque to be closer to her son and his family. She is survived by her son, William; her daughter-in-law, Diane; and two granddaughters, Brittany Lynn and Kristin Melissa. She is also survived by three sisters, Carol, Vera Jean, and Dorothy, all of California. Lu was a delight to all who knew her, always the life of any gathering and a wonderful storyteller. One of her favorites was how she survived the Battle of Deming. Lu and her husband, Joe, after joining the Army Air Corps. in 1942, were transferred to Deming, NM from Whittier, CA. There she fought the weather, the blowing dust and dust Pneumonia. She was such a lively and funny lady that even her stories of her Deming years were fun to listen to again and again. Lulu was an accomplished organist and pianist. She was proud of the fact that she never took formal music lessons, and could play totally by ear. Her family and friends were always delighted when she sat down at the keyboard to play a tune. Music brought endless joy to her life. Lulu Belle was loved by all who knew her, young and old alike. Her upbeat, comical, sweet nature and quick smile will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Services will be held Saturday, November 9, 2002, at 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Interment will take place at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, CA, where she will be buried next to her beloved husband Joe. Should friend desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
