Obituary for Denison

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday November 21, 2002

M. Muriel Denison was born October 14, 1910 and departed this mortal veil on Sunday, November 17, 2002. Muriel arrived in New Mexico from Grand Rapids, MI in the summer of 1920 aboard a Ford Model-T in the company of her mother and father; her sister, Iva; her grandmother, Brewer; and her cousin, Bonnie. The Denison family's arrival in New Mexico eight years after statehood established them as one of the early 20th Century pioneer families that ventured west in search of health and a new way of life. Muriel graduated from Albuquerque High, and also received a degree as a Professional Secretary from the Albuquerque School of Business. During all of this time, Muriel helped in the family business, Denison Coffee, which was established by her father within a few years of their arrival in Albuquerque. Muriel's first job outside the family business was with Standard Oil Co, which took her to El Paso for a few short years. Realizing that her heart was with her family, Muriel moved back to help run the coffee business through the war years. She provided volunteer services during World War II, playing piano, volunteering at hospitals, and training with the local Red Cross. After the war, Muriel took her final professional job with Sandia Corporation, where she served in Administrative Support until her retirement in the early 80s. Once retired, Muriel was able to pursue her passions as a musician, a seamstress and square dancing, all of which she excelled. Muriel leaves behind her sister, Iva M. Porter; her brother, William J. and his wife, Mary Jane F. Denison; nieces, Sheri Porter and Mary Denison; nephews, Allan Porter, William Denison and David Denison; and special caregivers, Dianne Porter and Suzanne Bolton. We miss you Auntie Mo, and we will always love you. Graveside Services will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Friday, November 22, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Albuquerque Humane Society in Muriel's name. Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave. SE is handling her arrangements.
