Obituary for Lunsford

Richard Jackson Lunsford, 83, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, in Rowland, NC. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dora Lunsford, of the family home in Richmond, VA; sons, Richard J. Lunsford, Jr. and wife, Susanna of Buffalo, NY and William J. Lunsford and wife, Carol of Albuquerque, NM; daughters, Gayle Adams and husband, James of Rowland, NC and Mary Ann Austin and husband, Mark of Chesapeake, VA; granddaughters, Virginia Lunsford-Poe and husband, Leslie Poe, of Annapolis, MD, Jessica Schultz and husband, Brandon, of Albuquerque, NM, Jennifer Edwins and husband, Jonathan of London, UK and Johanna Lunsford Austin of Chesapeake, VA; grandsons, Michael Fernandez and wife Jennifer of Virginia Beach, VA, Joseph Fernandez and wife, Elizabeth of Charlotte, NC, Andrew Fernandez of Williamsburg, VA; David Fernandez of Greensboro, NC; Jeremy Christopher Austin of Williamsburg, VA; great-granddaughter, Beatrice Elise Lunsford-Poe; great-grandsons, Richard Jackson Fernandez, Jackson Dean Lunsford-Poe and Kevin Schultz; and brothers, Robert D. Lunsford and wife, Ebbie, of Gaithersburg, MD and John L. Lunsford, of Williamsburg, VA. An electrical engineer, Mr. Lunsford graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1939 and remained active as a Professional Engineer until last year. He began his career with the Rural Electrification Administration. During WWII, he served overseas as a captain, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in the liberation of the Philippines. After the war, he continued his career as an engineer in Montana; Oregon; Caracas, Venezuela; Charles Town, WV; and Richmond, VA. He retired as a Senior Utility Engineer for the City of Richmond in 1990. Mr. Lunsford was a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the American Legion. A Master Mason, Mr. Lunsford was a member of Malta Lodge No. 80, of Charles Town, WV and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Minister's Discretionary Fund, Rowland United Methodist Church, Box 66, Rowland, NC 28383, or to Hospice of Robeson, 2002 N.
