Obituary for Soybel

Erwin Slater, RPh, born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 3, 1928, passed away on December 18, 2001 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Surviving family members include his wife of 50 years, Anita; daughter, Beth Soybel Porter, MD, Ph.D. and husband, Allan of Albuquerque, New Mexico; son, Laurence M. Soybel, Lt. Colonel, USAF, (JAG), wife, Ann and sons, Michael and Geoffrey of Abilene, Texas; and son, Josh R. Soybel, wife, Trish and children, Jamison and Alex of The Hague, The Netherlands. He is also survived by his younger brother, William Soybel, MD of Lexington, Massachusetts. Erwin Soybel graduated from The University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy in 1951 and began his Pharmaceutical career at Soybel's Pharmacy on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden, CT practicing until 1979 when he retired from retail pharmacy. Erwin continued his career as a hospital pharmacist with The Federal Government in various locations including Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas; US Army Hospital, Augsburg, Germany; NATO Headquarters in Belgium at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Hospital and ultimately Albuquerque where he retired. Erwin took great pleasure in travel, volunteer work, the on-going support of Indian Gaming, the daily completion of the New York Times Crossword Puzzle, and raising dogs. He was an avid reader and took an active interest in local and national politics. He was a gentleman that could quote an appropriate verse of poetry for any occasion. Above all else he was a devoted and loyal husband and father who set a high example of how to live life to the fullest with integrity and honesty. The family wishes to thank the staff at The University of New Mexico Hospital and The Kaseman Hospice Unit at The Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque for providing Erwin with the finest of care during his final days. Private services for the immediate family were held at Congregation Albert Cemetery at Fairview Memorial Park in Albuquerque In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Erwin's name to The Albuquerque Animal Humane Society or a charitable institution of choice.
