Obituary for Petura

Frank Ensign "Pete" Petura, 87 died Wednesday, June 27, 2001 after a sudden massive stroke. Pete was born in New York on November 10, 1913 to Frank Joseph and Marie (Miller) Petura. He graduated from Westfield, N.J. High School and attended Carson Long Military School, completing his degree in mechanical engineering from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. Following his graduation, Pete went to work for General Electric. He retired after more than 40 years with the same company. During his years with G.E., Mr. Petura lived in several places including New York, Washington, D.C., Cali, Columbia, and Barranquilla, South America, and Toronto, Canada. He loved automobiles and enjoyed the hobbies of race car driving, photography and the outdoors. After retirement, Pete and his wife of 64 years, Vivian, enjoyed R.V. travelling all around the National Parks of our country. In 1976, they moved to Rio Rancho and became active in their new community. Pete was a member of the Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, the Sandoval County Historical Society, past president of the New Mexico Sons of the American Revolution, the Albuquerque Corral of the Westerners, the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, E.L.F.U.N. of G.E., and a life member of the Mechanical Engineers Society. He was also instrumental in getting the City of Rio Rancho incorporated having served as the chairman for the Charter Commission. Mr. Petura was preceded in death by his brother Richard. In addition to his wife, Pete is also survived by nephews Richard C. and John C. Petura; and a niece, Nancy Jean Weber. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Road and Meadowlark Ln, Rio Rancho with Rev. Dr. Lawrence R. Hitchens officiating. A reception in the Cremation Garden will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, the Sandoval County Historical Society, the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or the Alzheimer's Association New Mexico Chapter or a charity of your choice.
