Obituary for Mattson

John Benhard Mattson, Jr., 70, an Industrial Engineer at the Postal Rate Commission from 1976 until his retirement in 2000, died of a heart attack on June 22, 2001 at his home in Rockville, Md. Mr. Mattson, a native of Newton, Mass., received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Science Degree from the University of New Mexico, and Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1962. A member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, he served as a lst Lieutenant in the U. S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and later worked for ACF Industries in Albuquerque, N.M., his adopted state, where he also served two terms as a Republican legislator for District 14. In 1968, Mr. Mattson co-founded Mecca Computer Systems, Inc., and served as its president until relocating to the Washington, D.C., area in 1976. Mr. Mattson was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville where he participated in the"Russia Initiative" of the UM Volunteers-in-Mission program, participating in reconstruction and social outreach work trips to Vladimir, Russia, as well as Christmas in April and other community activities. Survivors include Nancy Wilburn Mattson, his wife of 42 years; three sons, John Edward, Thomas Michael, (Angela Livers) and Robert Wilburn, (Marvionni); and five grandchildren, Micailya, Alexzondra, Darius, Mackenzie, and Nicholas; he is also survived by one brother, Melvin Mattson (Christa); and two sisters, Muriel Kulow (Frederick) and Lynne Knauss (John). The family will receive friends at Pumphrey's Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Avenue, Rockville, MD. on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville, Md., at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2001. A private interment will take place in the Faith Methodist Church Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Faith Methodist Church Foundation at 6810 Montrose Road, Rockville, Md., 20852.
