Obituary for West

1932-2001. Barry J. West, 69, passed away at his home in Los Chavez on September 17, 2001, after a lengthy illness. He was born in his family's home North of Exira, Iowa to Doris Freeman McClusky on July 3, 1932. He was then adopted and raised by Ernest and Olive West. He attended the rural school North of Exira and graduated from Exira High School with the class of 1951. Barry then farmed on the family's farm until he joined the U.S. Air Force in January of 1953. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Parks Air Force Base, California in 1953. He served four years in the Air Force, three-and-a-half of which he was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, and received an honorable discharge in January of 1957. He returned to live in Exira and worked as a mechanic for Minerman Ford Motor Co. until June of 1964 at which time he moved to Los Lunas and was employed as a mechanic for Hadley Auto Transport for 14 years. He drove a Hadley Auto Transport truck until October of 1988 at which time he had to retire due to medical reasons. On August 21, 1953 he married Alberta Rattenborg at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. To this union, six children were born. Barry was preceded in death by his parents; his mother; his son, Neal West; brother, Mike McClusky; his father and mother-in-law, Otto and Mildred Rattenborg; a brother-in-law, Robert Rattenborg; and one nephew, Richard Schaeuble. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Alberta (Bert) of Los Chavez; three sons, James of Baton Rouge, LA, Barry Lee of the family home, Brock of Los Lunas; two daughters, Juanita and husband, Glen Bowman, and Barbie and husband, Anthony De La Cruz all of Los Chavez; his grandchildren, Danielle, Brandy, Amber, Danny, Cassie, Amanda, Joe Don, Roslyn and Derrick; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Ruby and husband, Gordon Stiers of La Vista, NE; his sisters-in-law, Delores and husband, Ray Schaeuble, and Beverly and husband, Joe Schaeuble all of Carroll, Iowa, Jean and husband, Tom Fancher of Belen, and Wanda and husband, Dave Wolf of Exira, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Rodney Rattenborg and wife, Vickie of Carroll, Iowa; a very special person, Paul Jones of Baton Rouge, LA, who was like a son; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 21, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Los Chavez and will be officiated by Pastor Boyd Morerod and Pastor Charles W. Carlson of the Valley Lutheran Church of Los Lunas. Burial will follow at Terrace Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Arrangements by Riverside Funeral Home in Belen.
