Obituary for Howell

Leonard G. Howell, 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 3, 2001. He was born in Tombstone, Az on July 18, 1913. His parents moved to the Carlsbad/Artesia area in 1914 where they had purchased a ranch. After Leonard graduated from high school in Artesia, he moved to the Sacramento Mountains where he met and married Katie Lee Sowell. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary September 20, 2001. Leonard has been a Deacon in the Estancia First Baptist Church for many years. He was Civic minded and was on the Estancia School Board for 12 years and served on boards and committees for various organizations in the community. He farmed in Artesia and Estancia for over 30 years, then retired in Mexico near the Sea of Cortez, as he was an avid fisherman. During this time, they lived part time in Estancia. He was preceded in death by his son, Louis Neil in 1970. Leonard is survived by his wife, Katie Lee, of Albuquerque; daughter, Lona Rae Marsh of Albuquerque, Carol Tindell and her husband, Gene of Eagle Nest; daughter-in-law, Dorothia Howell of Estancia; ten grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; his sister, Nora Beth Ayeock and husband, Bill of Green Valley, AZ, his sister-in-law, Mary Howell of Patagonia, AZ. Leonard was loved, respected and admired by those who knew him and will be greatly missed. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Estancia , Saturday, October 6, 2001, 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at the Estancia Cemetery family plot with Rev. Marc Dana Officiating. Pallbearers will be Shannon Denson, John Denson, Bret Popp, Leland Sedberry, Jeff Mahagian, Leonard Neil Howell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Yvette Hopperstead, Montette Sedberry, Collette Plantz, Lisa Mahagian, Kim Jablanski and Tawnya Pope Arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, NM.
