Matilda S. (Martinez) Tapia, 90, died peacefully in her sleep May 19, 2001. Matilda was born in Mora, NM, August 6, 1910, to Benedicto and Petrita Sandoval. She attended Harwood Girls School through the 10th grade and later graduated from Albuquerque High School. In 1931, she was married to Alfredo M. Martinez Sr. from Chimayo, NM. Matilda and Alfredo worked at Menaul School until his death in 1946. In 1947, she moved her family to Raton, NM where Matilda was active in missionary work. This is where she met and married Salvador Tapia. Matilda began her nursing in 1956. She retired from nursing in 1974 and returned to Albuquerque in 1976. Matilda enjoyed spending time with her family and also spent many hours working in her beautiful flower gardens. She is survived by her sons, Joe A. Martinez and wife, Mary Jo, Alfredo ¯Marty¯ Martinez Jr. and Reina; and daughter, Myrtle Jean Morgan and husband, Frank, who reside in Albuquerque. Also surviving are her four sisters, Rebecca Medina and Lily Martinez, both of Albuquerque and Alice Wright and Albina Cisneros, both of San Pedro, CA; grandchildren, Alberta Hunt and husband, Greg, Lavonne Shawn and husband, Doug, all of Albuquerque, Julie Semenza and husband, Corey of Great Falls, MT, Sheri Delaney and husband, Stan of St. Ignatius, MT, Brett Martinez and Shawna Martinez, both of Las Vegas, NV, Frank Morgan Jr. of Phoenix, AZ, Alfredo Morgan and wife, Elizabeth of San Antonio, TX and Glenn Morgan and wife, Angie of Denver, CO; and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m., at Second Presbyterian Church, 802 Edith NE, where she was the oldest active member. Private interment has taken place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the M and M Memorial Fund at Second Presbyterian Church, 802 Edith NE, 87102.
