Kern -- Robert Kern, 65, a resident of Albuquerque, a professor of History at the University of New Mexico, died of cancer on Saturday, April 15, 2000. He had taught at UNM for over thirty years. Kern, born in St. Louis, MO, spent some of his childhood living in Europe with his mother, an operatic singer and music teacher. He graduated with a B.A. from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, OH, and after a year in law school obtained a M.A. and Ph.D in history from the University of Chicago, where he studied under William Hardy McNeil and Bernardo Blanco Gonzalez. After a postdoctoral scholarship to the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, he taught at the University of California, Riverside, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before coming to UNM in 1968. While at the university, he served for more than a decade on the Faculty Senate and as chair of the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee, as well as spending eight years as president of the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors. On the national level, he was a founding member and former office-holder of the Society of Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies and of the Southwestern Labor Studies Association. Of Kerns ten books, his dissertation provided the material for two of the earliest, both of which dealt with the problems connected with the modernization of political structures in the Spanish-speaking world. He later created and co-edited The Historical Dictionary of Modern Spanish History and The Regions of Spain: A Historical and Cultural Guide. His study of the Spanish Civil War, Red Years/Black Years: A Political History of the Spanish Anarchists, 1909-1937, was particularly well known. In addition, Kern wrote about New Mexico, and his Labor History of New Mexico was published by the UNM Press. He co-edited with Jane Slaughter one of the first collections to deal with women in radical politics, European Women on the Left. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Kern. Mr. Kern is survived by his sons, Jonathan of Studio City, CA and Joshua and his wife, Katie of Denver; and by his wife of the past eleven years, Susan Brake. Adios Jon, Josh, and Susie, all of whom he loved very much, because he wrote this obit, wanting to write and edit right down to the final moment of life. Cremation has taken place and memorial services to celebrate his life and work will be held on Friday, April 21st, 2:30 p.m., in the Alumni Chapel at the University of New Mexico. In lieu of flowers, Professor Kern requested donation be made to the University of New Mexico Bands, Dept. of Music, University Hill NE, 87131. Lewis -- David G. Lewis, 69, passed away at home April 14, 2000. He came to New Mexico in 1975 from Racine, Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joyce; three children, Pam and husband, Lee of Pocatello, ID, Cheryl and husband, Robert of Racine, WS, Jeffery and wife, Katy of Rio Rancho; seven grandchildren, Justin (deceased) of Pocatello, ID, Cori, Heidi and Katy of Racine, WS, Jennifer, Nicole and James of Rio Rancho; one great-granddaughter, Christina of Racine, WS; sister, Sally and husband, Warren of SunCity, AZ; brother, James and wife, Julie of Lake Ridge, VA. David served in Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the B.P.O.E., Lodge #2500. There will be celebration of David's life Thursday, April 20, 2000, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, 1530 Barbara Loop, Rio Rancho for family and friends. Markowitz -- Sanford (Sandy) S. Markowitz, 63 years old, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, April 15, 2000. He was a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1959, and a former resident of Albany, New York. He is survived by his parents, Jack and Ida Markowitz of Albany, New York; his brother, Sid Markowitz and wife, Eileen of New Jersey; his sister, Helene Blanc of California; his son, Wess Markowitz and wife, Donna of Indiana; his son, David Markowitz, MD and Beatrice Mete of Albany, New York; two grandchildren, Jessica and Jennifer Markowitz of Indiana, and his long time companion, Beth Coe of Albuquerque, along with many other friends and relatives. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him. Sandy was a graduate of Albany High School, a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War era, an officer of the Paradise Hills Volunteer Fire Department, and was a district representative of the Duke City Singles. He was also a member of the AOK Aeromodelers of Kirtland and an active member of the Albuquerque ROMEOs. He retired from Sandia Corporation after thirty-four years of service. Mcdonald -- E.H. McDonald, Jr., 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, died Friday, April 14, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth A. McDonald of Albuquerque; sons, Randall C. McDonald and wife, Meryl of Dallas, TX and Jeffrey D. McDonald of New York, NY; granddaughter, Amanda M. McDonald; brother, Robert D. McDonald of California and Roger K. McDonald and wife, Doris of Michigan; and many friends. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mr. McDonald retired as Lt. Col. US Army entering the service as a private. He served in Europe during WWII. Services will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE with Dr. Paul Debenport officiating. Ramsey -- Arthur Benjamin Ramsey, 85, passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lyle Osborne Ramsey; sons, Phillip Ramsey of Palm Beach, FL, David Ramsey and wife, Susan of Lake Jackson, TX, Hal Ramsey and wife, Debbie of Plano, TX, Rev. Benjamin Ramsey and wife, Ann of Gainsville, TX, Jeff Ramsey and wife, Rebecca of Corrales, NM; grandchildren, Douglas, Elizabeth, Allana, and Alexandria Ramsey; step-mother, Mary Fiers Ramsey of Scottsdale, AZ; sister, Marie Maril of Oklahoma City, OK. Mr. Ramsey was born on November 27, 1915 in Oklahoma City, OK to Walter Roy and Anna Virginia Ramsey. Arthur was destined to live a special life. At the age of 13 he began his career as a newsreel cameraman by filming the President of the United States at Yellowstone National Park. During the decade of the 1930's, he filmed all of the events and people of a depression-era Oklahoma. He was an aviator in the late 1920's flying his own Stearman biplane. When WWII started, he joined the production people of Hollywood in a special combat film unit in the Signal Corps. After the war he was President of the Empire State Building. His father, a titan in the oil business, passed away in 1946. Arthur returned to Oklahoma and started an oil business of his own. He moved to Albuquerque in 1969, running his oil business from here until his death. He loved life to the fullest. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held for his friends at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 20, 2000 at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Chaplain Lemuel Boyles, officiating. Private interment of the cremains will take place at a later date at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Stafford -- Vivian Tache Stafford, 85, a lifelong resident of Roslyn, Washington, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000. She is survived by her son, Robert C. Stafford and wife, Betty Jo of Albuquerque; grandsons, William R. Stafford of Walnut Creek, CA and Brian C. Stafford and Veronica of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Nicolas C. Stafford and Issac J. Stafford, both of Albuquerque; brother, Robert Tache of Cle Elum, WA; nephew, William H. Tache and wife, Jan of Hawaii; and many other cousins and friends in the Cle Elum, Roslyn, WA area. Mrs. Stafford had been visiting her son in Albuquerque and became ill. She was a member of the Episcopal Church in Roslyn, WA. During her stay in Albuquerque she made many friends, thus there will be services in Albuquerque. Vivian will be dearly missed by all her family and many friends in Albuquerque and the Cle Elum-Roslyn area. Services will be held Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Deacon Bob Contreras officiating. Services will also be held in Cle Elum, WA. Stromberg -- Thomas Daniel Stromberg, born May 5, 1953, in Albuquerque, died April 17 in a traffic accident in San Mateo, CA. Tom's charismatic personality brought spirit, creativity, adventure, and a sense of fun to both his family, and hundreds of devoted friends in San Mateo and San Francisco, CA; and Seattle, WA. Tom leaves behind a distinguished career in Information Systems, mostly recently serving as CIO for Walmart.com. He held similar positions in banking and retail services, but more than anything, Tom was a totally dedicated family man. He leaves behind Louis, his beloved wife of 17 years; his sons, John and Michael; and his daughter, Katherine. He will be missed by colleagues, by children at Park School, St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School, and Serra High School in San Mateo. No child was without a playmate if Tom was nearby and the Stromberg home was a constant center of action, sports and play, always open to friends and visitors. Tom attended St. Pius X High School and the University of New Mexico. Tom is also survived by his parents, Patricia and Robert; sisters, Mary, Ann and Marcella (Albuquerque); brother, Mark (Carmel Valley, CA), Peter and James (Albuquerque), Paul (Portland); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and John. A children's educational fund has been set up at Wells' Fargo Bank. Funeral will be held on Monday, April 24 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Burlingame at 10:00 a.m. with a celebration of his life to follow at the parish hall. Burial will be in Albuquerque.

Swanson -- Melvin Albert Swanson, born June 1, 1920 and died at home April 18, 2000 at the age of 79. He is survived by four children; sons Dirk, Ward, and Baird, and daughter Marn; and is survived by ten loving grandchildren. Melvin grew up in North Dakota, joined the US Navy in 1938, and served honorably throughout World War II aboard the USS Richmond in the Pacific theater. After the war, Melvin worked as a geologist throughout the western USA, eventually settling in Corrales, New Mexico to raise his family. His loving gentle spirit is with us all. There will be a memorial service at the United Methodist Church 136 west Calle Don Andres in Bernalillo (one block west of Abuelita's restaurant off Camino Del Pueblo) at 4:00 pm Friday, April 21, 2000. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, to please make donations to the Bernalillo Senior Citizen's Center.

Tracy -- Gertrude (Trudy) Tracy, 84, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, died Saturday, April 15, 2000. She is survived by her son, Robert J. Tracy and wife, Ellen O'Conner of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Julie, Michael, and Steven. Mrs. Tracy married Edward Garfield Tracy in 1948 in Milwaukee, WI. He preceded her in death in 1972. She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. She retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center as an occupational therapist. After her retirement, she volunteered at the downtown public library. Cremation has taken place and a memorial scripture service will be held Thursday, April 20, 2000, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Deacon James Baca officiating. Private interment of cremated remains will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
