Gutjahr -- Allan L. Gutjahr passed away on January 3, 2000 after a year and a half of fighting lymphoma. He was born on a farm near Hosmer, South Dakota on March 20, 1938 to Christian E. Gutjahr and Emma (nee Preszler) Gutjahr. He went to a one-room country school for his education through the eighth grade and then went to Hosmer High School. After graduating in 1956, he spent two years in the US Army, returning briefly to help his parents with their last harvest on the farm. He leaves his dearly loved wife of the past 18 years, Peggy (nee Sjostedt); five wonderful children, (Kurt Gutjahr of Oregon, Eric Gutjahr and his wife, Angie of Columbus, IN, Ted Taylor and his wife, Miki of Japan, Kristin Cassidy and her husband, Ed of Houston, TX, and Meghan Kofod and her husband, Peter of Raleigh, NC; and four grandchildren, Troy Cassidy, Christian Kofod, Brett Cassidy and Ken Taylor. In addition he is survived by three brothers and their wives, (Arthur and his wife, Vicki of Paulsbo, WA, Gerhardt and his wife, Betty of Hosmer, SD, Reinhold and his wife, Elinor of Aberdeen, SD); two sisters and their husbands, (Delilah Eiseman and her husband, Bruno of Eureka, SD and Lorina Jung and her husband, Melvin of Aberdeen, SD); one aunt, Lydia Pietz of Aberdeen, SD; his mother-in-law, Margaret Sjostedt of Belen; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and beloved sister, Alvera. His love for his family was manifested by his commitment to all of them. He cherished all of his children who were held close to his heart. he always felt he learned much from each of them and felt enriched by the unique and wonderful experience they added to life. Allan attended Central Washington College in Ellensburg, Washington for one year and graduated from the University of Washington in 1962. He worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey for nine years. During that time he also received a Masters degree from Johns Hopkins University (1963) and a Ph.D. from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (1970). In 1971, he joined New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) as an assistant professor of mathematics. He was dedicated to his subject and to the students at Tech. Throughout his career at New Mexico Tech he was always active in research and he viewed teaching and research as having a unity. He truly loved teaching and was committed to the students. After his promotion to full professor, he also served as Mathematics Department Chairman, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Vice President for Research. He always remained active as both a teacher and researcher while serving as an administrator. In 1997, he gave up the Vice Presidency for Research to devote his energies full time to his true vocations of teaching and research. He received the New Mexico Tech Distinguished Teaching award in 1987 and the New Mexico Distinguished Research award in 1999. He is the only faculty member to receive both those awards. In 1999, he retired as Professor Emeritus, but remained active in research throughout the rest of his short life. In June of 1999, he was further honored by being elected a fellow of the American Geophysical Union in recognition of his pioneering research in the area of geostatistics as applied to groundwater hydrology. He greatly enjoyed collaborative research and his many friends in the international groundwater hydrology community. They and many of his former students offered wonderful moral support during his battle with cancer. He served as a director of the Valley Improvement Association since 1993. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Belen and also was a tutor with the Literacy Program. Contributions in his name may be made to the Allan Gutjahr Scholarship Fund, Office of Advancement, New Mexico Tech, 801 Leroy Place, Socorro, NM 87801 or to the building fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Belen. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, January 5, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., at the Romero Funeral Home, 609 North Main Street, Belen, NM. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 6 at First Presbyterian Church, 85 Manzano Expressway in Rio Communities followed by burial at the Tome Catholic Church Cemetery in Tome. Pallbearers are Carl Popp, John Wilson, Howard Kercheval, Tony Zimmerman, Carl Axness and Mickey Shortencarrier. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Corey and Osman Inal. Hunt -- Nadine"Dene" Hunt, age 77, died Tuesday January 4, 2000. She is survived by her husband; Darrell Dean Hunt of Albuquerque; sons, John Ford and wife, Mary Ann of St. Louis, and Gene Summers and wife, Karon of Dallas, TX; daughters, Sharon Lopez of Albuquerque, Denice Hunt of Oklahoma City, and Carol Abendroth and husband, Paul of Altamont, IL; grandchildren, Stacey Ford and wife, Janice, and Cory Ford both of St. Louis, Jason Kinkelaar of Denver, Joshua Kinkelaar of St. Louis, Aaron, Courtney, and Megan Abendroth all of Altamont, IL; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Brandon and Bryan Ford all of St. Louis; and sisters, Maggie Whitley and Jessica Schembri. Nadine was an auxiliary member of the American Legion Post 49. Keller -- Mr. Donald E. Keller, 71, formerly of Swampscott, MA and Stoneham, MA, a retired welder, died Monday morning in Albuquerque. Born in Swampscott, MA, son of the late Allen and Freda May (Wile) Keller, he received his education in the Stoneham school system and graduated from Stoneham High School, Stoneham, MA. He is survived by two sisters, Judith A. Young of Gloucester, MA and Topsfield, MA and Dottie Kelly of Albuquerque; one brother, Robert A. Keller of Harlington, TX; several nieces and nephews. Lewis -- Elfi Lewis, 73, of Grants, NM, went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2000. She was a resident of Grants since 1964, where she arrived with her six children from Germany. She was brought here and is survived by her sister, Christa Garcia and husband, Dr. Arthur Garcia of Albuquerque; seven sisters and one brother in Germany. She accomplished many things in her life, but her greatest pride and joy was her family. She will be greatly missed by her children, Karin Vallo and husband, Henry of Bernalillo, Tina Ford and husband, Arnold of Grants, Birgit Chacon of Farmington, Klaus Sthalhut of Bluewater, NM, Connie Walter of Santa Fe, Andrea Lovato and husband, Pat of Santa Fe and Mike Lewis and wife, Heidi of Santa Fe; 14 grandchildren, Daniel, Scotty, Heidi, Jeremy, Julie, Beverly, Marc, Leslie, Lorelee, Holly, Emily, Jody, Bradley and Spencer; 15 great-grandchildren, Anthony, James, Jimmy, Johnny, Annmarie, Tyler, Ryan, Amanda, Christina, Mathew, Joshua, Andrew, Mariah, Savanah and Megan. Leyva -- Ageda"Aggie" Leyva, a resident of Bernalillo, passed away suddenly. She is survived by her husband, Frank; one daughter, Isidra Leyva; three sisters, Eva Garcia and husband, Santiago of Carlsbad, Catalina Carrasco and husband, Felix of Carlsbad, Dolores Baca and husband, Ramon of Albuquerque, and Criselda Sing and husband, Mike, also of Carlsbad, Ysabel Galindo and wife, Amelia of Carlsbad. She was preceded in death by her brother, Adan Gaindo; and her parents, Angel and Josephina Galindo. Lucero -- Luis A. Lucero, 83, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past five years, coming to Rio Rancho from Los Alamos, passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2000. Luis was born November 9, 1916, the son of Abel E. and Ursula Garcia Lucero in Los Luceros, New Mexico. He had been an Explosive Specialist with the Los Alamos National Laboratories before retiring. Luis served in the US Army during WWII as a paratrooper. He was a member of the American Legion Post 90 and the VFW. Luis was married to Margaret Ulibarri on March 23, 1944 at the St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Lucero of Rio Rancho; four children, Theresa A. Lucero of Albuquerque, Patricia L. Ytuarte and husband, Edward of Santa Fe, L. Anthony Lucero and wife, Janell of Los Osos, CA, Marcel U. Lucero and wife, Eleanor of Rio Rancho; three sisters, Ursula Ortiz and husband, Candido, Delia Sedillo and husband, Johnny, Alice Gomez and husband, Frank; two brothers, Fred Lucero and wife, Emily and Claude Lucero and wife, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Paul Ytuarte, Kenneth Ytuarte, Bryan Ytuarte, Gabriel Lucero, Nicolas Lucero, Emily Lucero, Marcel Lucero Jr., and Stewart Lucero; one great-grandson, Alex Ytuarte. The visitation will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2000, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. Lunt -- Harry Ruel Lunt, age 80, of Belen, beloved husband of wife, Ellamae, died December 31, 1999 at Saint Joseph's Hospital. He was born on April 3, 1919 at Williamsport, PA. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1942 and thereafter served in World War II. In 1945, he received the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in action. Mr. Lunt was a Special Agent in the FBI from 1948 until 1976 when he retired. Thereafter he worked as a Private Investigator periodically out of the Detroit Michigan area for eight years. Subsequently, he was employed by the U.S. State Department as an investigator in their Security Department for seven years. Mr. Lunt was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where he had previously served as an elder in St. Clair Shores, MI and in Belen. He is survived by his wife, Ellamae Lunt of Belen; a son and his wife, Jeffrey R. and Karen Lunt of Albuquerque; a daughter and her husband, Leslie and James Byrnes of Paradise Hills. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Erin and Jake Byrnes. A Memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Belen, 85 Manzano Highway, on Friday, January 7, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the New Mexico Boy's Ranch, 775 Highway 304, Belen, NM 87002. Massie -- Helen D. Massie, Age 91, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Edmond S. Montoya -- Mr. Jacobo Montoya died Tuesday in Albuquerque at the age of 90. Mr. Montoya was a member of the American Legion Post 99 for many years. He is survived by his wife, Benigna Montoya; sons, Manuel Gallegos and wife, Sharon, Jacobo Gonzales, Arturo Gallegos and Rudy Gallegos; daughters, Josie Gallegos and Theresa Tate; brother, Macario Montoya and wife, Sinforosa; and his granddaughters, whom he loved dearly, Melanie Gallegos, Ashley Gallegos, Jordan Tate and Ellexandria Tate. Funeral services for Mr. Montoya will be held on Friday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Fr. Joe Vigil.
