Obituary for Carleton

Colonel Linwood "Woody" Carleton (USA Ret.) 1917-2001, a Belen resident for 27 years, died Sunday, May 13, 2001. Born in Maine, Woody entered the US Army at age 25. He landed on "Omaha Beach" in Normandy and fought his way through France where he quickly rose to the rank of company commander of an infantry rifle company and earned the nickname "Hard Rock". He fought in the"Battle of the Bulge" and then on through Germany, his unit ending its WWII campaign in Czechoslovakia. He went on to serve 26 years, ending his military career as a full colonel earning the peace time medal"The Legion of Merit", his final posting being Chief of Communications for the US Army Chief of Staff, the Pentagon. His non-military achievements include Realtor/broker in the Belen area, 3rd degree Master Mason, trophy trout, a sweet golf swing, his marriage of 52 years to his wife, Bette, and their three children. He is survived by two brothers, Daniel and Ronald Carleton; his wife, Bette; a son, Skip (LA. Jr.); two daughters, Leslie Carleton and Lisa Mowery; and five grandsons. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Following the Services, the family will be receiving at the Belen home. Donations can be made in Woody's name to the American Lung Association or the National Arbor Day Foundation.
