Obituary for Porter

Arthur Whitney, born in New Haven, CT on February 2, 1920 passed away on May 17, 2001. Surviving family members include his wife of 55 years, Iva; son Allan and wife Beth Soybel Porter; daughter Sheri Porter; sister-in-law Muriel Denison; brother-in-law William Denison and wife Jason; sister Shirley and husband Bernie Desko of Erie, PA; sisters Janet and Beverly; and brothers Scott, Charles and Philip. Arthur traveled west to New Mexico in 1943 courtesy of the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Kirtland Army Airfield. He then served overseas in Guam and the Philippines until the end of WWII. He returned to New Mexico where he completed a Business Degree at the University of New Mexico while assisting with the family business, Denison Coffee Co. After graduation, Arthur started his career at Sandia National Labs where he participated in many different facets of the lab's operation. Some of his duties included the development of national shipping standards for nuclear and other sensitive materials, as well as management of weapons materials. Arthur was an avid HAM Radio operator (WA5ETF) and served as the State Coordinator for the Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS) during the Vietnam War. During this time he was responsible for connecting servicemen overseas with their family members using the amateur radio networks. Arthur took great pleasure in being outdoors, be it working in his yard or out playing golf. He was an avid reader, sci-fi fan, and armchair philosopher. He was, above all else, a loving and loyal husband and father who set a high example on how to live life with integrity, compassion, and honesty. The family wishes to thank the staff at the VA Hospital for providing Arthur with the finest care during his final days. Cremation has taken place, and interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery Tuesday, May 22nd, at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Arthur's name are made to the Albuquerque Animal Human Society. Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave SE is in charge of arrangements.
