Obituary for Walters

Mary Coon Walters passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at her home in Albuquerque of complications from bronchitis. Mary was born in Baraga, MI on January 29, 1922. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Asa Lane Walters, her father and mother, Marvin L. and Nancy Conway Coon, her brothers, Marv Coon and Jim Coon and her sister, Nancy Coon Cleary. She is survived by her son, Mark and daughter-in-law, Lori; and grandsons, Brad and Danny. She is also survived by her sister, Catherine Larsen; many nieces; nephews, and countless friends, in whose hearts Mary's passing will leave a large void. Justice Walters' accomplishments were legion. She served as a delegate to the 1969 New Mexico Constitutional Convention, was the first woman on the District Court in Albuquerque, was elected to the New Mexico Court of Appeals, and was appointed as the first woman on the New Mexico Supreme Court. She will be remembered for her service to God, to her country, as a pilot during World War II, to her state as an inspiring jurist, to her community, and most of all as a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher and friend. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2001 at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming NE. Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE, are in charge of arrangements.
