Obituary for Johnson

Dr. Joseph E. Johnson, a retired internist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque, died March 29, 2001 at Lovelace Medical Center. He was 83. Born in St. Louis, he was a graduate of the University of Missouri and the University of Tennessee Medical School. During World War II, Dr. Johnson served as a Captain and medical officer in the Army Air Forces stationed in England and Germany. After the war he began his career with the Veterans Administration in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he married Dorris Matthews in 1951 and began raising four children, George, David, Joe, and Mary. In 1959, the family moved to Albuquerque. He loved rose gardening, trout fishing, and spending time at the family's cabin in Seven Springs. In addition to his wife and four children, he leaves nine grandchildren. Donations in his memory can be made to the Keator Endowed Scholarship, for UNM medical students who agree to practice in medically underserved New Mexico communities.
