Dr. Ella May of Fort Worth, TX, and a resident of Albuquerque, NM since 1962, passed away January 25, 2001. She was 89. She is survived by her brother, M.A. Small and his wife, Dorothy; nephew, Walter Small, and his son, Bryan of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by nephew, William (Bill) Small of Albuquerque. She is also survived by Bill's family, his wife, Glenda Small and their children, Tessa, Aaron and Amber, all of Albuquerque. Dr. Small was very active in Fellowship Bible Church-in the Sunday School Department, and each year in the Vacation Bible School. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gospel Literature International, P.O. Box 4060, Ontario, CA 1761-1003. Dr. Small began her professional career in public schools at Fort Worth as an Elementary Teacher and High School Physical Education Teacher. She also was a faculty member of the University of Nebraska and the University of Iowa before she joined the Colorado State College faculty in 1946 as an Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education. She left CSC to become Director of Heath Education in the College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation of Texas Woman's University at Denton, TX. This move brought her to a part of the country with which she is familiar. She attended the elementary schools and high school at Fort Worth, TX. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas Woman's College, now Texas Wesleyan, at Fort Worth and her Master of Arts Degree, conferred in 1937, is from the Texas Woman's University to which she returned. She received the Doctor of Education Degree from UCLA in 1955 in Heath Education and Psychology. Her doctoral study was on staff relationships in college and university physical education departments. Immediately before coming to Greeley, she was engaged in recreational therapy for the American Red Cross in military hospitals and for nearly a year was stationed at Camp Carson General Hospital at Colorado Springs. She has been honored by membership in numerous professional organizations including Colorado Education Association, the American and Colorado Associations for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Central Associations for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Central Association of Physical Education for College Women, National Association of Physical Education for College Women, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and Pi Lambda Theta, National Education Sorority. She was chairman of the professional leadership committee of the National Association of Physical Education for College Women and was a member of the organization's constitution committee. Dr. Small was also a faculty member of Sam Houston State College in Huntsville, TX, before she joined the University of New Mexico in 1962, where she served as Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Dr. Small was appointed Chairman of the National Committee on the Coordination of School and Community Health Programs. The committee is part of the American School Health Association and includes representatives from the executive office and American Medical Association, health educators, nurses, physicians, and administrators from public schools, colleges, universities, and community and public health organizations. Dr. Small is coordinator of Health Education at UNM, president of the New Mexico School Health Association and council member of the Mid-Rio Grande Comprehensive Health Planning Organization. Dr. Ella May Small, former Professor and Coordinator of Health Education, The University of New Mexico, retired after 44 years of teaching-six in elementary and secondary school and 38 in colleges and universities. Dr. Small was presented with written tributes from students and co-workers bound in a"thesis" format at a large reception in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Paul B. Dearth. The New Mexico School Health Association established"The Ella May Small Education Award" in recognition of her contributions to health education in New Mexico. Services will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2001, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
