Obituary for Sep£lveda

Dr. Betty R., 80, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003. She was born in Vallecitos, NM on January 26, 1923. She married Rev. Thomas Sep£lveda on July 21, 1940. As a Spanish Methodist minister's wife, she lived in New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, and Colorado during their 50-year marriage. She was a Denver, Colorado resident for 43 years and most recently, a resident of La Vida Llena Retirement Community in Albuquerque. She is survived by her two children, Dolores C. Weeks of Albuquerque, and Thomas Sep£lveda, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Thomas Dale Weeks, Geri Laniss Weeks-Easley, Arthur Byron Weeks (deceased, 1996), Rachel Eve Sep£lveda; and five great-grandchildren. Dr. Sep£lveda earned degrees in education from Baylor University, Colorado College, and Denver University. She was a member of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. She was acknowledged for her innovating reading methods and her tireless work teaching under privileged children. She was described as"a fine and sensitive mind" in a Denver Post editorial (May 22, 1982). She retired from Denver Public Schools as a Curriculum Instructional Consultant. Among her many honors and awards for her work as an exemplary educator, the most notable for her were her appointments to the Intergovernmental Advisory Council of Education by President Reagan and Denver's Distinguished Citizen's Award in 2000. Her vigor, high standards, talent, and substance are the legacy she bequeaths. Although always near the heart, her presence will be missed. A Celebration of Life¯ Service was held in Albuquerque to acknowledge and honor her life. At her wishes, she was cremated and her ashes will be inurned next to her husband at the University Park Columbarium in Denver.
