Obituary for Candelaria

Cora Mary Candelaria passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2003 in Grants, New Mexico. Mrs. Candelaria was born on August 9, 1921 to Thomas Jefferson Phelan and Stella Mary Stott Phelan in Pleasant Valley, Arizona. She was 81. She is survived by her husband, David Candelaria of the Ice Caves; three daughters, Janet O'Connor, Debbie Reinschmidt and Betsy Reinschmidt; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren also survive. Cora, usually called Reddy, grew up in Globe, AZ. She met and fell in love with David at NAU in Flagstaff, AZ. They were later married in Waukegan, IL on September 3, 1943. They moved to the Ice Caves in 1946 where they owned and ran the natural attraction for over 50 years. Cora was a published author and poet. As promoter of the Ice Cave and tourism, she coined the phrase, used today,"The land of Fire and Ice." She spent part of her college years working for the war effort at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. She believed helping others was a way of life and she lived this belief every day in some way. She had a generous spirit and celebrated life. Visitation will be Wednesday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Grants Mortuary Chapel. Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Grants Mortuary Chapel. Catholic Memorial Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Grants Mortuary Chapel with Father Alberto Avella officiating. Burial will follow at Candelaria Family Cemetery near the Ice Caves. Pallbearers will include Jimmy Candelaria, Steve Reinschmidt, Rory Reinschmidt, Daniel Reinschmidt, David Reinschmidt, Jerry O'Connor, John Reinschmidt.
