Obituary for Heaston

Joseph Reed Heaston died January 19, 2003, in Milwaukie, OR. He was 93 years old. He was born on July 23, 1909, in Canton, OH, the seventh of ten children born to Irvin and Effie (Ripley) Heaston. He graduated from Huntington (Indiana) High School and later attended the U. of Alabama and North Manchester (Indiana) College. During WWII he served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in March, 1943, for medical reasons. In that same year he went to work for the U. of New Mexico in weapons development and, later, for Sandia Laboratories as a weapons technician and supervisor. For many years he worked in atomic and nuclear weaponry testing in New Mexico, Nevada, Hawaii, and the South Pacific. He retired from Sandia Corporation in 1969. Joe met Alice Clayton in 1935 at Jemez Pueblo where he was working for the soil conservation service and she was the Public Health Service nurse for the pueblo. They were married on April 18, 1936, in Santa Fe, NM. She predeceased him in 1977. Survivors include son, Joseph R. Jr. of Fountain Hills, AZ and Cameron, MT; daughter, Alexandra (Sandy) Bohlman of Seeley Lake, MT; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Disposition was by cremation. At the request of Mr. Heaston, no services were held. All arrangements were made by Wilhelm Funeral Home, Portland, OR.
