Obituary for Jackson

Verna B. Jackson, a resident of Albuquerque for 13 years, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2003. She was born in Denton, TX, June 18, 1910, the oldest of 3 children, having 2 brothers, who preceded her in death. She was 12 when her mother died and she became mother to her brothers. She was determined to get her education, graduating from high school at 16 and from college at 19. She earned her bachelor's in Spanish from Texas Women's University. She began her teaching career in Tornia, TX. She married Albert Jackson (who preceded her in death in 1970) June 6, 1931 in El Paso, TX. They moved to Carlsbad in 1932. The have five children who survive her; LaVerne Allen, Stanley, AZ; Bill Jackson, Fort Lauderdale, FL; Bobbie Hale, Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; Jim Jackson, Boulder, CO; and Louise Kodituwakku, Albuquerque plus 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. In order to stay home with her children, she began Jack and Jill Kindergarten, which she successfully operated for 25 years. In 1968, she became financial secretary for First United Methodist Church in Carlsbad retiring at age 78. She was a member of Eastern Star, Business Women's Association, and United Methodist Women's. She taught Sunday school and was mentor to many who learned to teach under her guidance. In 1990, she moved to Albuquerque to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Kodi. She was active in PH United Methodist Church, transporting many friends to services. She became less active as she developed Alzheimer's. For two years, she was blessed with love and care daily from, Debbie and Rachel. Paul and Mickey Duganne faithfully represented her church, providing communion each month. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. at French Mortuary - Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. NW (3 blocks N. of Paseo del Norte) a reception will follow at Paradise Hills United Methodist Church, 4700 Paradise Blvd. NW. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Carlsbad at a later date.
