Obituary for Castillo

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday January 03, 2003

Victorio Calleros Castillo, patriarch of the Castillo family, was born in Zacoalco, Jalisco, Mexico on November 2, 1904. To escape the Mexican Revolution, a 15 year old Victorio came to the United States with the hope of finding greater opportunities to support his mother, brothers and sisters. He met Maria Luisa Calleja in 1927 and brought his new bride to the United States a year later. Victorio, a self-educated man, continued his life-long quest of learning taking English and citizenship classes. He took formal machinist classes as well, which prepared him to fulfill a childhood dream of working on train engines. Victorios career with the Santa Fe Railroad spanned 47 years, during which time he honed his skills to reach the level of master machinist. The primary love of his life; however, remained his wife and family. Sharing his passion for life were gardening, travel and his legendary love of history. After retiring from the Santa Fe Railroad, he worked for another 20 years helping his son at Victors Pharmacy. Victorio is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria Luisa, who has awaited him in heaven since December 10, 1999. Victorio and Maria Luisa Castillos seven children are: Victor Castillo, Alice Montano, Evangeline Aragon, Irene Candelaria, Maria Luisa Cullum and Gloria Castillo. They have 31 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. Rosary will be recited at St. Annes Catholic Church, 1400 Arenal Rd. SW, Friday, 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 10:00 a.m. at St. Annes Catholic Church, with Father John Shedlock, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Castillo, Michael Montano, Ricardo Marquez, Juan Cullum, Zac Cullum and John Candelaria. Honorary Pallbearers are Sachi and Gabriela Campos. Friends may visit Friday, one hour prior to the rosary. Arrangements by French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
