Obituary for Olmstead

Geneva Marie Olmstead, longtime Albuquerque resident, died Thursday of a heart attack and complications of a lingering illness during an extended visit to Hawaii. She was 83. In addition to her loving roles of wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she was an extraordinary gardener, who showcased her tomatoes and roses, and a heartfelt poet. A member of the Montgomery Church of Christ for 32 years, she had been a dedicated Sunday School teacher during her younger years, especially in congregations in Dodge City, Kansas, and Guymon, Okla. Ms. Olmstead, who was born in McKey, Okla., April 22, 1919, lived in Oklahoma, Arizona and Kansas, before moving with her family to Albuquerque in 1971. She is survived by her daughters Donna Olmstead of Albuquerque and Joyce Finley of Waipahu, Hawaii. Also grandchildren, Ryan Jones, Rachel Jones, Greg Olmstead Jr., Shell Seaman, Shawn Cole, Stacy Cole and Taran Finley. She has eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Wilson; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Olmstead; her sons, Charles and Freddy Cole and Greg Olmstead Sr.; and her daughter Sandra Romo. Visitation is 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Funeral Options at 7601 Wyoming NE. A graveside funeral service will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Instead of flowers, consider sending a memorial donation to All Faiths Receiving Home or the Alzheimers Association in Albuquerque.
