Obituary for Burke

Mary Noonen Burke, 90, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2003. She is survived by her children, John P. Burke and wife, Pattie of Scottsdale, AZ, Kathleen Burke Anthony of Albuquerque, Michael F. Burke and wife, Jini of Tucson, AZ, Joseph K. Burke and wife, Mary Ellen of Broomfield, CO and Dorothy Burke Fitz-Gerald and husband, Gerald of Albuquerque; brother, Thomas J. Noonen of Gallup, and his children, John Noonen, Timothy Noonen, Joyce Noonen Simmons, Joseph Noonen and Theo Noonen Sanchez; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren. Mary was born in Santa Rosa, New Mexico on August 18, 1912 to Mary Dora Maher Noonen and Michael C. Noonen. She attended school in Santa Rosa, Gallup and Silver City before moving to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico for two years. Mary taught in the coal camps in Gallup/McKinley County schools. In 1937 she married Frank J. Burke of Gallup. She finished her Bachelor of Arts degree at Denver University in 1949, then moved to Albuquerque in 1950 where she taught in APS elementary schools until her retirement. Mary earned a Master of Arts in School Administration from UNM in 1958. She was a member of the Catholic Church, active in Democratic Party politics and lived in the North Valley for the last 20 years of her life. The staff at St. Mary Rest Home cared for her lovingly. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, 10:30 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper NW, with Father Edmundo Rodriguez, Celebrant.
