Obituary for Blakely

Herbert Earl"Garth" Blakely, died Saturday, March 22, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer. Garth was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 28, 1938 and lived in Albuquerque since 1964. He is survived by his daughter, Laurel Baird of Del City, OK; his son, Christopher Blakely of Moriarty, NM; and four grandchildren, Robert Montoya, Sydney Baird, Brandon Blakely and Chelsea Blakely. He is also survived by a sister, Joan Peoples of Berea, KY and two brothers, Bruce Blakely of Hugo, OK and Blair Blakely of Modesto, CA. Of special mention are Garth's two best friends, Lyn Carter and Mary Ann Calahan. His lifelong career as a pilot included service in the New Mexico Air National Guard's 188th Fighter Squadron. While completing 248 combat missions in Vietnam, piloting F-100's, he was awarded the Air Medal and The Distinguished Flying Cross Medal. Following military service, he retired after 30 years of service as a Continental Airline's pilot. The Family would like to give a Special Thanks to all the health professionals at St. Josephs radiation/oncology and Lovelace Health Systems for the care Garth received during his battle. Cremation has taken place and Private Services are scheduled. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the charity of your choice.
