Obituary for Palanker

Dr. Harold K. Palanker, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since January 1, 1979, died Monday, March 24, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice Palanker of Albuquerque; daughters, Maureen Leshendok and husband, Thomas of Reno, NV, Robin Palanker and Leonard Crofoot of Los Angeles, CA, Leslie Palanker and husband, J. F. Dufresne of Paris, France and Abby Gail Palanker of Los Angeles, CA; and grandsons, Joseph Dufresne and Luc Dufresne of Paris, France. He was born in Romania and immigrated to the United States in 1930 at the age of 17. Dr. Palanker attended Medical School at the University of Buffalo where he graduated in 1940. He served in the United States Army as a Major in the Medical Corps during WWII. Upon his return, he completed his residency at Buffalo General Hospital. He met Janice Powsner and they were married on May 9, 1948 during his residency. He then went into private practice and was also Full Attending in Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Buffalo and Associate Attending and Active Service Teaching Division at Buffalo General Hospital. He was Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Buffalo, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Palanker served as president of the Buffalo Surgical Society, the Western New York Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the Maimonides Medical Society. He retired from private practice in 1979 to move to Albuquerque where he was connected to the Veteran's Hospital in the Ambulatory Care Unit for eight years. He was an avid golfer and member of the Four Hills Country Club. Dr. Palanker loved playing the violin and also spoke several languages. Memorial Services will be held Friday, March 28, 2003, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Interment will take place in a private ceremony at Congregation Albert Cemetery in Fairview Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to charity of your choice.
