Obituary for Gonzales

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday April 15, 2003

On April 12, 2003, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Roy G. Gonzales, 65, was called by our Lord to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Roy is survived by his beloved family, wife Emma, sons Paul Gonzales and wife Karen from Corrales, Daniel Gonzales from Rio Rancho, and his grandson James Gonzales form Corrales. Also surviving are his mother Inez Gonzales from Albuquerque, his sister Adelina Cordova and husband Joe from Albuquerque, brothers Eddie Gonzales and wife Irene, and Bevian Gonzales from Phoenix, AZ, Lee Gonzales and fiancée Linda from Albuquerque, Morris Gonzales and wife Katy from Albuquerque, a very special friend Michelle Saenz, and may relatives and friends. Roy was preceded in death by his father Eduardo Gonzales, sister Dulcinea Gonzales, and brother Horacio Gonzales. Roy was born on May 7, 1937 in Ft. Sumner, NM. Joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1958. He joined the Albuquerque Fire Department in 1959 and, after 26 years of dedicated service, retired in 1985 as Assistant Chief (Fire Marshall). During his firefighting career, Roy earned his Bachelors Degree in Public Administration at the University of Albuquerque, and his Masters Degree from the University of New Mexico. He also taught Fire Technology at the University of Albuquerque. In 1986 Roy and Emma retired to Bernalillo where they have lived for the past 15 years. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, whom he was very proud of. His grandson, James was his pride and joy. He was able to travel to many countries, making friends everywhere he went. After a courageous battle with his illness, the Angels came to get him, much sooner than we planned. God has him back again and our memories are what will sustain us until we meet again. We will love and remember him forever. Rosary will be recited by Fr. Bill Sanchez on Monday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo. Mass will be celebrated on April 15 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Virgil Furfuro officiating and Fr. Bill Sanchez as co-celebrant. Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Magin Gutierrez, George Montoya, Gilbert Gonzales, Lee Gonzales, Ernie Ulibarri and Herman Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers will be James Gonzales, Morris Gonzales, Evy Marquez and Adrian Cordova. Reception and Celebration of life to follow immediately at the Radisson Inn in Santa Fe.
