Obituary for Dowell

Uley¯Pappy¯ Dowell, age 79, a resident of Lake Sumner, NM for many years died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 in an automobile accident at Lake Sumner State Park. Pappy was born April 11, 1924 in Eldon, Iowa to the home of Uley Dewite Dowell Sr. and the former Grace Howard. He served over 22 years in the United States Navy during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a longtime member and Post Commander of American Legion Post #29 at Lake Sumner, a member of the National Bass Club, North American Fishing Association; Good Sam's Club; National Rifle Assn.; and a member of the Eagles Club in Roswell and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles at Fort Sumner. Pappy was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Georgia Jones on November 16, 2002; a brother, Irish Dowell and a sister, Goldie Chapman. Survivors include a son, Marvin Dowell of McAlester, Oklahoma; two grandsons, Christopher T. Dowell of Alameda, CA; and Benjamin M. Dowell of Maryland. Cremation has taken place. A remembrance service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner, NM with Mr. Mitch Gray, pastor of the Fort Sumner Church of Christ officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at 5:00 p.m. at American Legion Post #29, Lake Sumner, New Mexico.
