Obituary for Vargas

Mary B. Vargas, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003. She is survived by her sons, David A. Vargas and wife, Norma, Marty Vargas and wife, Cara, Richard Vargas and Tony Vargas; Lawrence Vargas and wife, Terry; daughters, Pat Tarrend and husband, Dix, Rita Vargas and Debbie Vargas; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; sister, Louise Garcia; brother, Gilbert Baca and wife, Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, David H. Vargas, father, Nester Baca, stepfather, Nep Lueras, mother Dolores Lueras, son, Michael Lueras, and granddaughter, Monica Vargas. Mrs. Vargas was born February 18, 1923 in Vaughn, NM. She attended University of New Mexico and received bilingual endorsement. Mrs. Vargas was one of the first state educators to assist in teaching bilingual courses at East San Jose Elementary School. She retired from APS after 17 years of service. Mrs. Vargas was an active member of Anna Kaseman volunteer auxiliary, NM Red Cross, Kidney Foundation, South Broadway, East San Jose Community Centers, and LULAC Organization South Valley Chapter. She also volunteered in various Congressional, U.S. Senate, NM Governors, Presidential elections, and state and local races. She participated in the organization of the first Headstart program. During her volunteer career, Mrs. Vargas was able to meet and dine with Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. She was member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church and Legion of Mary. She enjoyed attending various social functions with her husband, David, traveling and reading, as well as, family gatherings. She was a wonderful compassionate wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend to many of those in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Rosary will be recited Thursday, May 1, 2003, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 2, 2003, 9:00 p.m., at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Brian Vargas, Matthew Vargas, Alex Tarrand, Shawn Vargas, Raymond Tafoya, and Lawrence Charles Vargas. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jason Vargas, Joseph Vargas, David Edmund Vargas and"Little" Marty Vargas. French Mortuary 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, 275-3500
